Congratulations to Herbert Johnson who was selected as Lakewood High School’s 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year!

Mr. Johnson is a native of Sumter, SC. He received a Bachelor’s and a Master’s of Music Education degree from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC where he also completed over 30 hours of graduate coursework in the field of Arts Administration. Mr. Johnson is in demand as a clinician for church music workshops and high school district honors choirs and festivals.  His choirs consistently receives superior ratings at state and national adjudicated festivals.  In 2012, He conducted a city-wide youth choir for Charlotte at the Democratic National Convention while conducting his own students for events which featured national government and political officials. He is a two-time GRAMMY music educator! He received the Grammy Signature Schools Enterprise Award in the amount of $5,500 each time for Bessemer City High School, NC in 2011 and for Lakewood High School, SC 2015. He was named Star Teacher for Bessemer City High School 2011- an award which recognizes the lifetime most inspiring teacher of the school’s valedictorian.  He currently serves as choral director for Lakewood High School (Sumter, SC), the Sumter Civic Chorale, minister of music for Grant Hill Baptist Church (Rembert, SC) and president of the executive board for the Palmetto Voices of SC.  He has been recently awarded the 2015 Professional Alumni Award for Winthrop University.  In January 2016, he will be honored by, and presenting a session at the South Carolina Alliance of Black School Educators’ (SCABSE) state conference.
